Introducing Cambridgeshire’s brightest new squash star – now sponsored by Instant Home
Sofia is just 15-years-old and already racking up the squash trophies, including winning a major county competition. Instant Home is proud to support such an incredible talent and we look forward to seeing great things from Sofia. We’d like to introduce her with a Q&A:
How old are you?
I’m 15, in my first year of GCSEs
How long have you been playing squash?
Only a couple of years, I was 13 when I first started.
How did you get into the sport?
My uncle plays a lot and really loves it, he knew I enjoyed sport so he suggested I try it at the place he trains. As soon as I started playing I loved it – I knew this was my game. I trained with my Dad at first, but then I started beating him!
How much time each week do you spend playing?
A lot! I play every day – my Dad gets free courts with One Leisure – so I train every day after school and at the weekends, and have lessons twice a week.
Do you play any other sports or is this your whole focus?
I have always loved sport – I am definitely not the sort of person who sits around! Sometimes I play football and basketball for fun but my main focus is definitely squash.
What level do you play at?
I play for the Hunts County Women’s Team 2 and I have represented Cambridge in tournaments. I recently won the women’s b-grade county competition which I am very proud of. Last month I was player of the month with the county group. I play in lots of competitions and the great thing about squash is that it’s more equal than other sports – so women and men play each other all the time. I also play against different age groups, not just people my age, which I really enjoy because I feel like I learn a lot.
What are your ambitions?
The next thing I am aiming for is to win the Junior Open which is a national squash competition – I’m hoping to compete in it next year. Ultimately I’d love to compete in the PSA (Professional Squash Association) World Tour.
What does this sponsorship mean to you?
It means a lot! It gives me an opportunity to really improve my game, to show other people what I can do and to take my playing to the next level.
