Christmas festive fun in Cambridge
After all the build-up and excitement of Christmas, the kids are still off school, and many of us adults are managing to take a much-needed break as well. But the age-old question remains of what to do over this period that’s relaxing and keeps the festive magic alive? Luckily Cambridge has lots of possibilities this winter, so grab your coat and hat while we take you on a whirlwind tour of the holiday treats our fair city has to offer:
Walking and Punting Tour – Cambridge has many wonderful city tours available, but this one is particularly special, especially when it’s cold outside. Wrap up warm for an hour’s long walking tour discovering all sorts of fascinating facts, then enjoy a delicious mug of hot chocolate before embarking on the second part of the tour, relaxing on a punt whilst been chauffeured around ‘The Backs’. This takes you under riverside college bridges and takes in classic Cambridge sights such as King’s College Chapel, The Bridge of Sighs and the Mathematical Bridge. More information and book here.
Classic Ballet – Nothing quite says winter like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, especially performed by renowned dance company St Petersburg Classic Ballet. You may be at the Cambridge Corn Exchange but you can easily imagine yourself in snow-filled Russia where you will be whisked away to a truly enchanting winter wonderland. 30th December – 1st January.
Fun at the Panto – Does the beanstalk go all the way to Amarillo? You might well find out at this year’s pantomime at the Cambridge Arts Theatre! Pop legend Tony Christie, famous for the chart-topping hit ‘Is This The Way To Amarillo’ is heading up an all-star cast bringing you Jack & The Beanstalk. The perfect way to bring festive cheer! On until 7th January.
Visit the North Pole! – There is also still time to head to the North Pole for some wintery fun this holiday – and it’s not as far as you might think! At Parker’s Piece in Cambridge until 8th January you can delight in a winter playground that includes ice skating, a fun fair, warming food and drink and even a cosy Undercover Alpine Bar – which maybe where Santa’s elves head for a rest after the busy Christmas period!
Winter walk to Grantchester – What better way to spend this quiet and contemplative time of year, before the new year begins at full speed ahead, than with a beautiful winter’s walk? Grantchester is only about half an hour’s walk from the centre of Cambridge and takes you through some delightful countryside.
Winter garden – Cambridge University’s Botanic Garden always puts on stunning displays and winter is no exception. A real hidden gem, the garden re-opens after the Christmas on 2nd January, where you can take some time out wandering through their winter garden, taking in the sights and sounds.
And most importantly, remember to allow yourself this time to rest, to spend time at home with friends and family, taking time to be grateful for the little things.
