What’s on in Cambridge over the Easter holidays
Cambridge is a wonderful place to be over Easter, the city comes alive as spring works it’s magic on the many green spaces, the river glistens in the sunshine and the streets buzz with activity. Whether you live locally or are a tourist planning a visit to our beautiful city, there is lots on offer. We have compiled this handy what’s on guide for spending Easter 2018 in Cambridge.
Joy riding
Help to ease congestion in Cambridge by taking one of the city’s five park and rides. And if you use the service between 29th March and 15th April, then you can also take part in their Easter trail. Simply pick up a trail sheet at any of the five sites and start collecting the letters to create an Easter related word. Everyone who takes part gets a free chocolate bunny and you could even win a £250 shopping trip.
What’s the story
Head to Heffers bookshop for lots of bookish fun for kids. They have several wonderful children’s book authors doing readings – all followed by a fun activity. They also have drop in craft sessions to make Easter bunting from 11am to 3pm on 30th March and 15th April – and it’s all completely free.
Green and pleasant land
Cambridge is renowned for its beautiful green spaces – and we’re lucky enough to have plenty even in the heart of the city. And with spring peppering it’s magic across the hedgerows and amongst the branches of the trees, now is the perfect time to head outside and get the kids running around the park, maybe even enjoy a picnic or a game of football if the weather is fine. After all, football was invented in Cambridge! Try Jesus Green, Christ’s Pieces, Lammas Land, Parker’s Piece or Midsummer Common. There are also many stunning countryside walks around Cambridge, amble along the river from Cambridge to Grantchester or wander through the enchanting 900 year old Brampton Wood.
On the hunt
And, of course, Easter wouldn’t be Easter without an Easter egg hunt! There are plenty on offer in the area. Cambridge University Botanic Garden will be holding their annual free Lindt Gold Bunny Hunt from 24th March to 15th April. And the National Trust pair up with Cadbury’s for their treasured annual egg hunts at Wimpole, Angelsey Abbey and Wicken Fen Nature Reserve. Be sure to check out the other activities that the National Trust have going on over Easter as well, from springtime arts and crafts to nature trails and exploring wildlife.
Go on an indoor safari
The Museum of Zoology reopens its doors to the public on Tuesday 27th March after extensive refurbishment. Get up close and personal with a whole range of animals including a giant sloth, elephants, hippos, whales and more.
Grown up fun
And if by the end of all of that, you’re exhausted from running round with the kids all Easter, then treat yourself to a child-free date night and head to the newly opened restaurant The Ivy. The opening of the London A-list favourite is a much anticipated event for Cambridge foodies. Be sure to book in advance.
