What’s On this Easter in Cambridge
The city of Cambridge has the benefit of being both steeped in history and also a modern, vibrant and bustling home to wonderful restaurants, theatres, music venues, shops and galleries. It is actually hard to create a what’s on guide to Cambridge for the Easter holidays as there is always so much to do in this incredible city. However, we have done our best to whittle it down to a small selection of highlights for you which we hope you will enjoy, either with kids or without. Whether you are lucky enough to already live here, are thinking of moving to Cambridge or are just here for a minibreak, you will never be bored in this beautiful place.
Green fingers:
Hope Street Yard is a real hidden gem in the centre of Cambridge – just off the vibrant Mill Road. It’s a thriving community space with lots of quirky shops and artists in residence. Cultivate Gardens are offering their Botanical Days pop up on 19th and 20th April from 10am to 5.30pm. Pop along for plants, vintage pots and advice and inspiration for your home. And while you’re there you can also visit the variety of traders and makers and pick up some unique pieces to decorate your house.
Funny bones:
If you fancy having your funny bone tickled then head to the ADC Theatre – perhaps the liveliest theatre in Cambridge! It’s part of the University of Cambridge and is in fact the oldest university playhouse in the country. Plus it’s home to the world renowned Footlights which has produced famous alumni such as Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. From 17th to 20th April you can see the very funny and heart-warming ‘Brassed Off’. Or you can go a bit more off the beaten track and try ‘Murder Most Expected’ from the hilarious Cambridge Improv Factory in the Corpus Playroom from 18th to 20th April.
Find your inner child:
The Corn Exchange is another one of Cambridge’s excellent venues. On 11th April they have a show that adults and children will both find magical. ‘The Little Prince’, the world famous story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is being brought to the stage with a mixture of dance, humour and spoken word. A beautiful show, it invites all of us to look at the world through our hearts and reconnect with our inner child. Tickets £12/£8. And if you are taking the little people in your life, you can go beforehand for a free pre-show arts and craft ‘Hands On Happening’ session in the foyer, led by a professional artist.
Walk on the wild side:
Just a short distance from Cambridge is Shepreth Wildlife Park. The park is a wonderful place to see a variety of animals and has just seen the arrival of two new Sumatran tigers. Only an estimated 300 to 500 of these magnificent creatures are left in the wild and the zoo is hoping the tigers will raise awareness of their plight. The park is open every day from 10am to 4.30pm with last entry at 3.30pm. It costs £12.50 for adults and £10.50 for children.
Easter eggs and the great outdoors:
Enjoy the great outdoors and head to one of our nearby National Trust properties. Angelsey Abbey, Peckover House and Garden, Wicken Fen and the Wimpole Estate are all running Easter egg hunts over the holidays. They also have a variety of other goings-on available for kids, from nature trails and insect hunts to treehouse hideaways and arts and crafts activities.
Enjoy the view:
The rooftops of Cambridge are truly an iconic sight. The best place to take in a panoramic view of the city is from the tower at Great St Mary’s church. This fascinating historic church was the first home to the University, was visited by Queen Elizabeth I in 1564 and played a key role in the Reformation. To see the city from its tower is a treat not to be missed. It’s open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5.30pm and Sunday from 12.30pm to 5.30pm. Entry costs £5.
